Unless you are familiar with Search Engine Optimization (SEO) it can be intimidating. This article should help clear the fog a little even if you are simply trying to find out who to hire to solve your problems. If you aren’t sure what SEO is take a look at our video “What is SEO and how you can use it to your advantage?” on our blog and it should clear that up for you. SEO can be a confusing term because there are so many sub-terms and variations involved like: organic SEO, hybrid SEO, local SEO, affiliate SEO, keyword research, competitor analysis, domain authority, trust flow, just to name a few.
So first things first there are a few categories of SEO. Pay-Per-Click (paid), Organic (free), and hybrid (a mix of both). I consider these to be like the general tools in your tool belt. It does get more complicated but for general understanding consider these like your hammer, drill, etc. these are the methods you use to get the job done. Now affiliate SEO (lead generation), client SEO (ranking business site), and product/video ranking are similar to the different trades. Plumbers, electricians, HVAC, etc.
In order to assess what type is best for you first you need to clearly identify your goal or your desired outcome. That should be your first step. That way you can pick the right “Trade” for the job. You don’t call the plumber to fix the fuse box right? The same way Affiliate SEO tactics wouldn’t generally fix a Client SEO issue. Once you have identified the right “trades person” it is much easier to pick the right tools for the job. The tools you pick are also affected by your desired outcome and budget PPC in particular you should be very budget conscious and set limits to your campaign or make sure your campaign manager is aware of your comfort level.
So if you feel like SEO is the answer to your businesses revenue issues first spend some time clearly defining your problems and what you want to achieve. At least that way you can have an idea of what kind of questions to ask when you call your “tradesmen”.
